Cadet Division Rules
Article 1
1.1 The Cadet Division provides an instructional, non-competitive introduction to softball. Each player will be
given the opportunity to develop the fundamental skills needed to play, and enjoy, the game of softball.
Article 2
General
2.1. A minimum of seven players is required to field a team and avoid a forfeit. A forfeit will be decided fifteen
minutes after the scheduled starting time. At least two players must be outfielders. If both teams have less than seven players,
the game shall be rescheduled, if possible.
2.2. A full game consists of six innings. A tie game after six full innings is a complete game. There will be no extra
inning games. Time permitting, the home team should have a sixth inning regardless of the score.
2.3. A minimum of four full innings is required for an official game.
2.4. A half-inning is complete when 3 outs are recorded, or 5 runs have been scored.
2.5. All players must wear the official team uniform, cap and jersey. Jewelry may not be worn except for religious
or medical purposes and that jewelry should be taped.
2.6. New innings may not start within 15 minutes of the next scheduled game, nor after 8:00 PM.
2.7. Base path distance shall be sixty feet.
Article 3
Batting Rules
3.1. All batters must be placed in the batting order. Players arriving late will be placed at the end.
3.2. All batters and base runners must wear helmets.
3.3. Throwing the bat is not allowed. Beginning with the second offense for a team in a game, batters will be called
out for throwing a bat
3.4. There is no bunting, nor minimum distance for a fair ball.
3.5. There are no walks when a coach or teammate is pitching.
3.6. A batter may have up to seven pitches, when a coach or teammate is pitching, before a strikeout is recorded. A
foul on the seventh pitch allows the batter allows the batter an eighth and final pitch. If another foul occurs, it is recorded
as a strikeout.
3.7. When a defensive player is pitching, the batter will remain at bat until the ball is hit into play, the batter
strikes out, walks or the batter is struck by a pitch.
Article 4
Base Running
4.1. There are no leads. The runner may not leave the bag until the bat contacts the ball.
4.2. There are no advances on overthrows.
4.3. Base runners must avoid collisions with fielders. In the event of a collision and the runner fails to slide,
the runner is out and the ball is dead.
4.4. A ball that has been hit into the outfield is considered dead when it comes back into the infield and/or
contacts an infielder.
Article 5
Pitching
5.1. Beginning May20th, defensive players will pitch the third and fourth innings of all games.
5.2. When defensive players are pitching, balls and strikes must be called. The strike zone is liberal to
encourage hitting.
5.3. When defensive players are pitching, only one defensive coach will be on the field. He or she will function
as the umpire.
5.4. When a defensive player is not pitching, the offensive team may elect to have either one of their coaches or
players to pitch to their batters.
5.5. If any pitcher hits two batters in a game, her team must assign the pitching duties to another person. Batters
must attempt to avoid being hit by a pitch.
5.6. If a defensive pitcher walks more than four batters in one inning, they must be relieved of their pitching duties
by an offensive coach or an offensive pitcher for the remainder of that inning. The pitcher may return the next inning.
5.7. Pitchers may only pitch in two innings per week. One pitch is considered an inning.
5.8. When an offensive player is pitching, they are to attempt to avoid all contact with the ball once it is
in play. A defensive pitcher will be in place even with or behind the offensive pitcher. 5.9. If a batted
ball strikes an offensive pitcher or coach, it is a dead ball and ruled a single.
Article 6
Fielding rules
6.1. Every player must play at least three defensive innings in a six-inning game. No player may sit in
two consecutive defensive innings. 6.2. Free substitutions are allowed on defense.
6.3. A maximum of ten defensive players are allowed. Outfielders will play four across. No short- fielder is allowed.
6.4. A player is limited to two innings per position.
6.5. Outfielders may not become involved in infield play unless it results from backing up a ball thrown to an infielder
and missed.
6.6. Outfielders must stand at least 35 feet behind the baselines during each pitch.
